Washington-The rhetoric surrounding
health care reform has hit a frightening pitch, but beyond the hysteria are the
life and death consequences of our current health care system being lived out
across Tennessee. A new national effort, the State Fairs Video Project, is
recording and showcasing those real life stories such as James’ of Union City,
Tenn., who worries about losing his job and health care for his family.
A team of filmmakers and
grassroots volunteers have traveled to state and county fairs in
Tennessee and across
America’s
Heartland to collect story upon story.
Away from the lies and madness at town halls, generated by insurance
companies afraid of losing their stranglehold on Americans’ wallets and well
being, are a silent majority of Americans who have simple and true stories to be
told about why we need reform. James’s video is just one
of several stories showing the human side of this critical debate.
“We believe peoples’ potent
stories are key to leading the direction of the health care debate back to what
matters - making sure everyone is covered,” said Deirdra Reed, Tennessee HCAN coordinator. “We must hold Reps. Gordon, Tanner and
Cooper’s feet to the fire. We’ve elected
them to stand strong for Tennesseans, and we intend to encourage them to do the
right thing for the people as powerfully as we know how.”
The drum beat of action continues
with pro health care reform events across
Tennessee this week. The signature event will take place Thursday, September 3, 2009. More than 100 people will rally outside
Congressman Cooper’s office in Nashville, then board a bus and caravan to
Murfreesboro armed with 15 thousand petitions from across the state to urge
Congress to “Get Back to Work” on reforming health care.
