Senate Judiciary Hearing Latest Indication Immigration Reform Coming This Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement by Marissa Graciosa, campaign coordinator for FIRM

Wednesday, Apr 29, 2009

Washington – Tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Committee will convene a hearing to discuss common sense solutions for our broken immigration system. Marissa Graciosa, campaign coordinator for Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), issued the following statement on the hearing:

“We commend the Senate Judiciary Committee for tackling this very important and timely issue. It is no coincidence that Thursday’s hearing, which will feature heavy hitters like leading economist Alan Greenspan and prominent evangelical Pastor Joel Hunter, will kickoff the debate the day before May 1st when many groups will be marching around the country in support of reform. Mr. Greenspan’s presence also underscores the importance of reforming our immigration system to restoring our economy. One cannot happen without the other.

“It’s clear that Sen. Chuck Schumer and his committee know that the American public wants a common sense solution. If our economy is to recover, we need reform that brings people out of the shadows, gives the hard working men and women already here an earned path to citizenship, keeps families together and provides legal avenues for future workers to seek out opportunities here and join our struggle to strengthen our economy.

“The election created enormous political momentum towards immigration reform. Now is the time to deliver.”
