Washington- A national coalition of community organizations across the country working to achieve quality health care for all, called the Health Rights Organizing Project, released the following statement as the national debate for health care heats up with President Obama’s health care town hall in Green Bay, Wis. and yesterday’s announcement by the American Medical Association opposing the public plan.

“Old school politics has got another big lobbyist group opposing what the majority of people in America want—the choice of a public plan that will cover us all, regardless of economic status and provide a baseline for quality care,” said G. Smith, associate director of the Northwest Federation of Community Organizations (NWFCO).  “We are tired of corporate lobby groups who contribute millions to political campaigns drowning out the voices of the rest of us.

“It would be a shame if, when the dust settles, we are once again left without real change.

“Perhaps President Obama can talk some sense into the AMA at their meeting on Monday in Chicago by repeating what he said in his town hall speech today: ‘We have to fix what doesn’t work.’ Maybe then they’ll get in line with the millions of people their membership serves.”
