Washington - The national summit of the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign ended this week with an address from White House Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, Cecilia Muñoz. During the week, the campaign unveiled a multi-faceted effort that brought more than 700 community leaders – 300 more than expected – to Washington, DC from across the country. For three days, participants took part in a strategy summit, congressional visits and a national town hall on immigration with members of Congress.
“We’re encouraged, energized and incredibly optimistic that immigration reform is on track at the White House and with Congress,” said Ali Noorani, executive director, National Immigration Forum. “The grassroots support will be there. Now we need leaders to lead.”
Highlights of the historic summit:
- A new alliance between business, labor, faith and immigrant communities committed to winning immigration reform this year.
- Over 100,000 faxes were delivered to Congress
- 500 grassroots leaders descended on Capitol Hill and participated in 140 meeting with members of Congress and their staffs.
- Members of Congress, the White House and key leaders from every field of American life addressed the summit.
This week was just the beginning for the movement to reform our immigration system. The Reform Immigration FOR America campaign is deploying new technologies such as a national text messaging system and other new on-line organizing strategies to put constituents directly in touch with members of Congress. Anyone can join the fight by texting “justice” to 69866. The campaign will send them alerts when their calls to Congress are urgently needed.
