Washington- Congress began debate yesterday on President Barack Obama’s federal budget plan that could fundamentally change ‘business as usual” in Washington and put the needs of working families first.  Critical in the debate is the creation of a reserve fund for revamping our nation’s health care system.  A national coalition of community organizations working on health care reform reacts to the start of the debate and the future of health care:

“This is the first President to put health care reform in the budget – it’s a historic and important first step to achieving a future that provides everyone access to affordable, high quality care,” said Gerald Smith, Organizer for the Health Rights Organizing Project (HROP).

“Our broken health care system continues to squeeze pocket books—forcing families to make tough choices about care over fare. President Obama’s reserve fund for health care must remain on the front burner through out this budget debate.  We must strive to make the promise of a healthy, secure life a reality for everyone in our communities.”
