Washington- President Obama made a vigorous endorsement of the public health insurance option in a letter to Senators Kennedy (D-MA) and Baucus (D-MT) yesterday.  The Center for Community Change issued the following statement praising this clear commitment to a public plan.

“The President hit the nail on the head when he said that a public option would give Americans a better range of choices, make the health care market more competitive, and keep insurance companies honest,” said Deepak Bhargava, executive director. “More than 70 percent of Americans favor the creation of a public plan. They have seen first hand how private insurers drive out competition, drive up costs and deny needed care.

“We hope the President's forthright statement will halt the brazen attempts of insurance industry lobbyists to scuttle the launch of a public plan. The proposals for triggers, qualifications, and delays currently being floated in Congress are simply the latest tactic to deny this essential option to Americans.

“Over the next few weeks, hundreds of community organizations around the country will be calling on their representatives in Congress to stand up for a public plan. This is an essential test of whether our leaders will side with private interests or act for the common good.”
