Washington-The Center for Community Change will be honored for its development of leaders for social and economic justice with the American Express Building Leadership Award today. Presented by the Independent Sector during their annual conference in Philadelphia, executive director Deepak Bhargava accepted the plaque and $10,000 gift on behalf of the Center.

For the past forty years, the Center for Community Change has strengthened the leadership, voice and power of low-income communities and communities of color nationwide to confront the vital issues of today and build the social movements of tomorrow. We believe America’s founding principles reflect community values in which everyone is part of the American story and together we can build a nation that works for us all.

“We believe in developing the skills of other people to speak in their own voice, rather than speaking for them,” said Deepak Bhargava, executive director for the Center.  “I am deeply proud of the work of the Center over 40 years to invest in that leadership at the grassroots level, with a clear commitment to low-income communities and communities of color where such great ideas and talent and inspiration most need to be harnessed and supported.”

A key strategy of the Center for Community Change is its Generation Change program which recruits and trains the next generation of social justice leaders through large-scale internships and fellowships while providing advanced leadership support to community organizers already working in grassroots organizations and communities around the country. The Center works to build talent in both the field in which it works and within its own walls.  In 2007, the Center launched a year-long pilot leadership development program to provide intensive leadership training for its staff.

The American Express Building Leadership Award was established in 1999 and recognizes the importance of investing in leaders of the nonprofit community by celebrating an organization that embodies this principle in spirit and practice.
