Washington- Today, President Obama reaffirmed that a public health insurance option must be included as part of comprehensive health care reform this year. Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Campaign for Community Change, released the following statement:
“A health care reform bill that merely tweaks the system without including a real public choice for Americans simply will not generate the degree of energy and enthusiasm at the grassroots, which will be necessary to offset the $1.4 million a day the insurance and health lobbies are spending to defeat change and keep business as usual. We need a strong public health insurance plan that is ready on day one. It is not only critical to lowering costs, ensuring access to care in every corner of the country, and keeping the insurance companies honest, but it’s critical to the actual passage of any reform package.”
