Washington-The
Campaign for Community Change released this statement today on the Senate
Finance Committee’s “framework”
for health care reform:
“We cannot support the current Senate Finance Committee’s
version of health care reform, and we call on members of the committee to fix
the flawed framework. Last week, the President outlined important
principles for reform including: affordable coverage and good benefits for
Americans, an end to medical bankruptcy, employer responsibility and a public
option to compete with insurers. The Baucus proposal for reform fails on
each of these accounts. It is not an exaggeration to say that this
version of reform is a gift to private insurance corporations and a mandate for
people to buy insurance that they simple cannot afford. It also contains a punitive set of rules that
would negatively impact low-income members of our communities, especially
women, immigrants and people of color.
“This is a terrible display of how the insurance lobby has
had undue influence in the health care debate and, once again, the people are
being asked to pay the price.
“The Senate Finance Committee’s framework is just one
version of reform now moving forward on the Hill, and every other bill is
significantly better for America’s communities.
This bill must be fixed. We call
on the Senate to stand up to the insurance lobby and support the work of the
White House, the Senate HELP committee and efforts by the House of
Representatives. Americans want true
health care reform that is affordable, includes all legal residents, provides
good benefits, ends medical bankruptcy and provides a public health insurance
option to keep insurance companies honest.”
