Independent Sector Announces 2008 American Express Building Leadership Award Winner
Announcement of the Center winning an award for leadership development.
Independent Sector has announced that it will honor the Center for Community Change in Washington, D.C., with the 2008 American Express Building Leadership Award.
Founded in 1968 with one of the first grants from the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Fund, the center works to develop the next generation of grassroots nonprofit leaders while strengthening organizations that help low-income people improve their communities. In turn, the organizations it helps work to improve lives in low-income communities and communities of color, including training them to take action on public policy issues such as housing, education, and health care.
As part of its Campaign for Community Values, the center encourages making social justice part of policy debates by building a unified agenda among its four core constituencies — African Americans, Native Americans, new immigrants, and low-wage whites. The center also founded and coordinates the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, a national network of three hundred organizations that trains members of immigrant communities to fight for their rights at the local, state, and federal levels.
"Independent Sector is proud to present the Center for Community Change with this award for investing in leaders who will increase social and economic justice among low-income communities," said Independent Sector president and CEO Diana Aviv. "Its dedication to promoting an inclusive and diverse society, as well as its commitment to building a new generation of talented young leaders, embodies the ideals this award celebrates."
