Alone or Together: Paths to Glory

The New York Times

Letter to the editor written by CCC staffer Kaitlin Gravitt to the New York Times in response to David Brooks' column "Harmony and the Dream." Ms. Gravitt is the Center's southwest field organizer.

“Harmony and the Dream,” by David Brooks (column, Aug. 12), about American individualism versus China’s collectivism, does not acknowledge the “collectivism” of our common history and humanity that are core, if not essential, to the American Dream.

Despite many unsuccessful attempts to perpetuate the myth that Americans go at it alone, it has been in times when we work together to build our communities and future that America has truly been at its best.

We have always been a collection of communities, learning together in our failures and rising together in our successes. And the only way we will continue to prosper together economically or otherwise is to acknowledge our collective history and build a future where no one is left behind.
