Finalist #2 Van Nuys Raids

Posted by tweedledub at 18-Jun-2008

I think it's the best one because it shows the double edged sword of constant fear if you live here without a greencard.I also think that it brings up an outstanding point about how the use of ankle monitoring devices are used on immigrant housewives when they should be used to monitor much more dangerous, murderous, child abusers, criminals - I've actually seen footage of other police agencies who've introduced the ankle device for those uses and publicly complained themselves for not having enough to competently monitor real criminals. So Why that lady is wearing one is beyond me and is outrageous.I also liked finalist #3 - they addressed a broader scope of the social complexities of the issue but I think they took too long to give you the real data - which was probably the point, giving you the actual experience of getting the runaround, but hey, everyone knows what its like to have to wait around & gets the runaround already....like, how did You feel when you first saw the length of this comment? ha!

My vote is for FINALIST #5! Go immigration!

Immigration, America, and My Community

Posted by senordolapo at 18-Jun-2008

One undenaible truth stands out with unblemished immaculacy, which is that the documentary by oluwaba is the latest snapshot of opinion which is shared by everyone. Ytjhis is so because the basic statements and questions about immigration are highlighted in a simple for. Succinctly put, Immigration, America, and My Community stands out as tall as the statue of liberty. And it would go places because it of a global view

Loved it! As an immigrant myself, I can really relate to the issues this documentary is adressing. Well done!!

Arivaca

Posted by jacqui at 18-Jun-2008

This was a great show of we're in this together... If only there were more little towns like Arivaca...

I like 'em all, but Arivaca

Posted by JulieFanselow at 18-Jun-2008

really sticks with me. I am truly heartened to know that there are such caring people living near the border. They could've signed on with the Minutemen, but instead they've chosen to treat their neighbors like Jesus would, as resident JJ said. Please show this one to Lou Dobbs. :)Congrats to all the finalists and everyone who entered. You are all walking the walk!!By the way, we have a community organizing video contest going on right now (deadline April 16) at Everyday Democracy. Show us how your community is walking the walk and you might win $1000. More info here: http://www.everyday-democracy.org/en/Page.VideoContest.aspx

Plexiglass

A good dose of humor sometimes takes us further than we think--Joe and Will got it with the Plexiglass--funny but so poignant.

Community Values and Immigration

Posted by Isagarcia at 18-Jun-2008

Arivaca: Life on the Border was my favorite film. After watching all the finalist I thought Arivaca told the story from both sides. I really got a sense of what the commnity has gone through watching the immigrants come through their city. And after watching their community go through changes because of immigrant they still believe that the US should help those less fortunate. You can see how a community has stuck with their values to help others even though others have changed their way of life. IT WAS GREAT!!

Arivaca, head and shoulders

Posted by HarleyPee at 18-Jun-2008

We're Great Because We're Different: I really liked the motif of bringing things into focus. I learned a few things from this video. All in all, it's nothing I haven't heard before though.Raid: I like how you picked a specific event and interviewed people involved. It showed a lot of work and love. If I didn't know the contest, though, I wouldn't know whether this was really about the raid itself or about the larger issue.Through the Plexiglass: I liked the humor, but I didn't think it really illuminated much. After all, what exactly does "partially updated" mean? The Constitution has been partially updated over the last 330 years or so, too. Maybe a little too light for this subject.Arivaca: Similar idea to Raid in picking a particular town. But I think you guys really succeeded in portraying Arivaca as a microcosm of the issue. In addition, you appealed to all the best parts of humanity. We should be hospitable, and reach out a hand to anyone in need. Everyone can relate to that, even if many disagree about this specific issue.Immigration, America, and My Commmunity: I liked this one as it seemed to be done by a high school or middle school student. I'm always glad to see kids getting into politics.I think it was well thought out and nicely put together. Top five, you should be proud. In the end, I think Arivaca really shines.

FINALIST 5 - Immigration

very inventive video.

Through The Plexiglass

Posted by bianca at 18-Jun-2008

Interesting work, the author found an important prospective, that is the one immingrants bang against: aseptic burocracy and inhuman professionalism. thank!

Immigration, America, and My Community

But esp love the last one (#5). It's funky and cool. Love it.

Thru the Plexiglass

Posted by ablack at 18-Jun-2008

I thought all the finalists' submisions were great. But I loved the use of humor in Plexiglass and how it highlighted how outdated and antiquated the current immigration system is.

arivaca

Posted by ronnib at 18-Jun-2008

gets my vote. excellent, moving.

They were all AMAZING

Posted by PiperJm at 18-Jun-2008

Through the Plexiglass

Posted by marguerita at 18-Jun-2008

Brilliantly uses the 80s time warp to highlight the problems of the outdated system.

TRHU THE PLEXIGLASS

Posted by dcusma at 18-Jun-2008

Anybody who went through the process of obtaining a Visa from USA knows that what this video shows is true!!!I loved the ironic cut of it.

My Vote Is for Arivaca

Posted by symsess at 18-Jun-2008

Through the Plexiglass is sadly comic, but I believe Arivaca shows us more that we're all in this together. The gentleman speaking at the end of the movie is my new favorite person.

Vote for #3 Behind the Plexiglass

Posted by arkrausehardie at 18-Jun-2008

Love the humor!

Like Arivica best

Posted by mnolan at 18-Jun-2008

Second place would be "We're great because we're different. ?Behind the Plexiglass" is a good idea, but it seems like a set-up. Raid is impressive, but it's not original work. I didn't particularly like Immigration, America, and my community; I don't see what's special about the people who speak, and the music is distracting.

Arivaca

Posted by dmurphy at 18-Jun-2008

Great work

ARIVACA

Posted by hdennis at 18-Jun-2008

All of the pieces were great. I was very moved by ARIVACA in particular.

Vote

Posted by Alcuin at 18-Jun-2008

I vote for "We're Great Because We're Different," because we are. I actually liked all of the videos and was touched by the man washing the woman's feet in Arivaca. Having helped my best friend through the intricacies of the INS (a procedure which made me embarrassed and ashamed), I also think the video about the difficulty of simply processing paper is also powerful. They were all powerful!

They're All Powerful

Posted by shankar at 18-Jun-2008

but I think the Arivaca video is particularly well done. The concept is simple and straightforward, and the message stays with you.

Posted by sgray at 18-Jun-2008

I vote for number 5.. the whole statue of liberty idea is brilliant... with one graphic we get the point. We are all immigrants (unless our name is geronimo) so back off!

Thru the Plexiglass

Posted by hrgarry at 18-Jun-2008

I vote for this video--great mix of humor and irony to get the tragic point across--our immigration system sorely needs help.

Thru the Plexiglass

Posted by hermizf at 18-Jun-2008

i vote for this film. The sense of humor lightens up the reality of this difficult and frustrating process. Incredible how inept our system can be at times.

#4 Arivaca; Life At The Border!

Posted by dvdjohnson at 18-Jun-2008

As a person who grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, this video resonated with me. It also gives the rest of the country an idea of what is happening where this issue hits first, and that there are some compassionate people there helping others out in need, and not discriminating against them.

ARIVACA

Posted by irinacm at 18-Jun-2008

awesome.. wish everybody would think like the guy who talks at the end. very well done. looking forward to the expanded version.

Arivaca

Posted by bwgoodman at 18-Jun-2008

My vote goes for Arivaca. Fantastic.

#1 We're Great Because We're Different

Posted by jsmyerscws at 18-Jun-2008

I think this video would change the most minds. The others are fantastic, but I think would only win over people who are already pro-immigrant. This one I think would bring in those who aren't too sure. Thanks for the great work on all of them!

my vote

Posted by Ryko at 18-Jun-2008
