Our Work
In 2008-2009, the Community Voting Project will work with community-based partner organizations in 26 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
These are states in which our partnerships are strong, issues critical to people of color and low-income communities are prominent, and our primary constituencies—African American, immigrant, Native American and low-income white communities—can have the greatest impact on public policy after the election. The Center has selected states in which contested elections will generate attention and energy, thus providing a spotlight for our partner groups’ activities and messages.
Our goals for 2008 year include the following:
- Increase the number of registered voters by 239,201.
- Mobilize 283,284 new and infrequent voters to the polls.
- Get to scale in at least 7 of the 26 states in order to create a higher profile for grassroots organizations, their issues and messages. We define achieving scale as working with a universe of infrequent voters that is at least 50% of the margin of victory in the Presidential race of 2004.
- Increase by 6% the voter propensity of infrequent voters reached through the Community Voting Project, compared to those not reached through the program.
- Significantly strengthen the data management capacity of grassroots organizations with whom we work by partnering with Catalist and using our own Civic Engagement List (CEL).
- Increase by 3% the number of trained volunteer members and leaders in partner organizations.
