Strategizing to Win Just and Humane Immigration Reform

Week in Community Values for May 7, 2009
Born out of a mass rejection of the failed policies of individualism and divisiveness, the Campaign for Community Values is a return to the beliefs our country was founded on: shared responsibility, shared sacrifice and shared success.

Immigrant Advocates to Gather in DC to Ready for Immigration Battle

The Fair Immigration Reform Movement, a project of the Center for Community Change, is convening the largest gathering of pro-immigrant organizers and allies this year, June 3-5. More than 400 leaders and advocates from the immigrant, faith, business and labor communities are expected at the Reform Immigration for America Campaign Summit.

At the Summit, participants will have the incredible opportunity to network, share stories, compare tactics and learn new skills in a variety of workshops. They will also receive the tools, information and organizing training needed to win just and humane immigration reform.

“The time is now to advocate for practical solutions that benefit all of us and are rooted in the restoration of the rule of law, earned citizenship, united families and fair treatment of workers,” said Marissa Graciosa, campaign coordinator for FIRM. “This summit will prepare and energize leaders and advocates for the legislative battle to win just and humane immigration reform.”

Thousands of Mothers to March for Health Care for All

SEATTLE – Thousands of mothers are expected at a march for racial equality, health care for all and public health care plan in downtown Seattle on May 30.

Washington Community Action Network is helping organize the event that will be supported by more than 126 organizations.

“The health of a family is paramount in a mother’s mind, which is why mothers are leading the charge for greater access and affordability in health care,” said Will Pittz, executive director of Washington CAN. “We want to show Congress and the President that the people of Washington State want reform that includes a public plan and addresses racial inequalities in health care.”
