Push for Public Option Continues, Gains Momentum and Supporters
Week in Community Values for July 9, 2009
Born out of a mass rejection of
the failed policies of individualism and divisiveness, the Campaign for Community Values is a return to the beliefs
our country was founded on: shared responsibility, shared sacrifice and shared
success.
Take a look at the great work our
partners across the country have done since we last updated you:
Grassroots Groups Move Congressional Targets on Public
Option
Community organizers
continue to push for only real solution to our health care mess – a strong
public option
Grassroots pressure works! It
took a while, but after weeks of relentless pressure from her constituents,
including busloads coming from North
Carolina to Washington,
D.C., Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) finally endorsed
a strong public option.
“We are pleased that Sen. Hagan
is so receptive to not only the voices of her constituents, but to the country’s
voice,” said Lynice Williams, executive director of North Carolina Fair Share.
“America wants a
strong public option that will finally make quality health care accessible and
affordable to everyone. And each one of us has to continue working every day to
make sure our elected officials understand this.”
Grassroots groups know there can
be no compromise on this. Reform won’t be true reform unless there is a strong
public option, and they’re committed to continue fighting to bring their elected
officials on board.

Council of Foreign Relations Adds Voice to Growing
Chorus for Comprehensive Immigration Reform
WASHINGTON
– Law enforcement agencies have come out for it. Business groups have urged its
passage. And now the Council for Foreign Relations, chaired by former Florida
Governor Jeb Bush, has urged Congress to revamp our immigration system that
clears legal channels for future legal immigration and provides a path to earned
citizenship for those already here.
“Congress can’t ignore the
swelling support for comprehensive immigration reform,” said Deepak Bhargava,
executive director of the Center for Community Change. “They can’t hide behind
economic woes when business and labor are pushing for reform. They can’t put it
off by calling it divisive when a clear majority of Americans want reform. They
can’t hide behind party lines when comprehensive immigration reform receives an
endorsement from a leading conservative group. The country wants and needs
comprehensive immigration reform this year, and we expect Congress to deliver.”
