No Recess in Progress for Health Care Reform

Week in Community Values for August 6, 2009

Born out of a mass rejection of the failed policies of individualism and divisiveness, the Campaign for Community Values is a return to the beliefs our country was founded on: shared responsibility, shared sacrifice and shared success.

Take a look at the great work our partners across the country have done since we last updated you:

No Recess in Fight for Affordable, Accessible Health Care; Groups to Continue Battle in August

Press Events planned all over the country to keep pressure on Congress for a robust public option

Washington – Grassroots groups are continuing to push elected officials during August recess. We’ve seen momentum for true health care reform with the passage of  the House’s Energy and Commerce Committee last week which required the hard work by local organizations to move four Blue Dog Democrats. While the House is in recess, groups everywhere will be meeting with their Representatives and holding events to remind Members of Congress of the importance of a public option in any health care reform bill.

“We’re meeting in community centers, libraries, schools, everywhere to connect our representatives with the people whose health is at stake in this debate,” said Deirdra Reed of TN HCAN and organizer for the Center for Community Change.  “We’re going to fight hard to keep the lies and distortions hurled by those trying to hold on to business as usual from derailing this Herculean effort to finally improve our health care system that excludes too many of us.”

Health Care for America Now! is also using the internet to give Americans everywhere a chance to be involved in this crucial movement. At http://www.healthcareforamericanow.org/ people can sign up to receive the latest news on health care reform, information on how to call their representatives and details on actions happening in their cities and states.

Anti-Immigrant Groups Mobilizing to Fight Health Care Reform

The Center for New Community released a report today revealing insider information disseminated by FAIR urging its regional spin-off groups to protest against health care reform at the town halls being held across the country. NumbersUSA is also riling up its members by misinforming them that if health care reform becomes a reality, undocumented immigrants will receive free health care. http://www.numbersusa.com/content/nusablog/cchmielenski/august-5-2009/august-visits-town-hall-meetings-most-important-thing-numbersusa

“Anti-immigrants groups are using the same tactic with health care that they’ve used for a long time on immigration reform – offer no solutions, just oppose anything and everything that would help all Americans,” said Marissa Graciosa, immigration campaign director at the Center for Community Change. “These groups are wedded to the status quo that has served them well, and don’t want any progress on initiatives that would help minority and poor Americans advance.”
