Washington - Tomorrow night, when all eyes are on Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) as he gives his historic acceptance speech at Invesco Field during the Democratic National Convention in Denver, among the millions watching is a movement of Community Values Voters who represent the call for change in America.  These voters are tired of the “go it alone” politics of the past and believe that Community Values are the foundation of this nation’s history and the promise of its future.

In anticipation of tomorrow night’s speech, Gabe Gonzalez, director of the Campaign for Community Values issued the following statement:

“Americans know that the ‘go it alone’ politics of division of the last thirty years have harmed all of our communities, our country and our world.  Now is our chance for real change; not change as a campaign slogan, but change as a reality.  Sen. Obama has an historic opportunity to remind America about our core values of inclusion, interconnectedness, shared responsibility and the inherent worth and value in all of us. Those are the Community Values that are really driving voters in this election.

“The change Community Values Voters look for is simple. America does best when it does for all – from those in mansions to those in the poorest neighborhoods. A healthy nation means we must all be healthy and have a healthcare system that works for everyone. A strong economy means we must prioritize shared prosperity, shared responsibility and shared sacrifice to make the economy work for everyone, not just a select few.  For America to be a great nation again, we must honor the role we all play in building the American dream – both immigrants and native born workers alike.

“As Community Values Voters, we will be listening closely to both presidential candidates to see if they do more than call for change.  Will they truly define a vision of a better America and a better world for us all?  Now is the time.”

The Campaign for Community Values is a growing movement of more than 300 grassroots, community-led organizations mobilizing voters in this election and beyond to demand policy changes that reflect our nation’s founding principles of shared responsibility, inclusion and interconnectedness.  The Campaign for Community Values launched by hosting the Heartland Presidential Forum in Des Moines, Iowa, in December 2007 and is an initiative led by the Center for Community Change. www.communitychange.org
