WASHINGTON, DC- Thursday night, as John McCain accepts the Republican Party nomination for President, among those watching is a movement of Community Values Voters who represent the call for change in America.  These voters are tired of the "go it alone" politics of the past and believe that inclusion, mutual responsibility and the inherent value and worth of everyone are fundamental values of our past that are the building blocks of our future.

In anticipation of the speech, Gabe Gonzalez, Director of the Campaign for Community Values and one of the organizers of nationwide immigrant rights marches in 2006, issued the following statement:

"The Republican National Convention has chosen the ideas of service, reform, prosperity and peace to illustrate its theme 'Country First'.   Those ideals are meaningless if we're all left on our own while big oil runs the economy and government ignores the common good.

"Peace and shared prosperity only come when we recognize that we're connected to each other and we all have value and worth in the American story. The economy works for all Americans, not just big business and a privileged few.  Government is meant to serve Community Values, not corporate values.  This is the kind of reform we hope John McCain will address tomorrow night.

"The type of reform that means healthcare for all, green jobs and the right to unionize Main Street voters want, rather than divisive policies that uses immigrants as scapegoats for economic problems that have much deeper roots.  It's not that the American Dream is gone; it's just been foreclosed on by Wall Street.

"As Community Values Voters we want Senator McCain to show what it really means to be a maverick and lead the change from the 'go it alone' politics that have plagued our society for the past thirty years. Our next President must re-build the American Dream for all of us."

The Campaign for Community Values is a growing movement of more than 300 grassroots, community-led organizations mobilizing voters in this election and beyond to demand policy changes that reflect our nation's founding principles of shared responsibility, inclusion and interconnectedness.  The Campaign for Community Values launched by hosting the Heartland Presidential Forum in Des Moines, Iowa, in December 2007 and is an initiative led by the Center for Community Change. www.communitychange.org.
