Hitting the Streets with Community Values

Grassroots organizations across the country are hitting the streets with community values!

Our grassroots partners are mobilizing their communities to support community values.  Already, groups are holding community values forums to tell our representatives that we are all in this together!

Here is a sample of forums that have already taken place:

  • The Kansas Campaign for Community Values:  On January 1st, Sunflower Community Action launched the Kansas Campaign for Community Values that emphasizes the need for our communities to work collectively on those issues that affect us all.   On March 18th, over 500 grassroots leaders from across the state of Kansas descended on Topeka to push to ensure that Kansas' politics and policies reflect our core values as a nation by promoting basic democratic principles, recognizing the contributions of all communities, rejecting the exploitation of workers, and by holding politicians accountable for real solutions to our issues.  The event included a rally at the State Capitol, meetings with State Legislators and an action on the head of the welfare department.  Check out the Ning site to check out resources from this event!
  • The California Partnership Budget Action:  On May 13th , more than 100 members of the California Partnership, a statewide coalition of community based organizations that fights poverty in California, flooded the offices of  leaders in California’s state Assembly and Senate to demand meetings and real solutions to California’s budget through fair tax policy. The current budget proposal makes drastic cuts to healthcare, education and California’s safety net for poor and working families.    The theme of the event could best be summed up by Anita Rees, a member and associate director of LIFETIME Califorinia...“The budget of the State of California must represent the community values of all Californians. We believe that everyone must be included in our healthcare system, that no child should endure a substandard education and that families must have a safety net in today’s difficult economic climate. We call for broad reaching prosperity for ALL Californians.”   Info about the event and other activities can be found on the California Partnerships' website hereAnd check out the Ning site to check out resources from this event!
  • Shared Fate Action Forum:  The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition held their  Forum on Saturday, May 31 at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church with over 1,000 people present.  Numerous elected officials were in attendance including Congressman Jose E. Serrano from the 16th District of NY, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, and State Assemblyman Luis Diaz, N.Y.S. from NYS Assembly District 86.   Community leaders shared personal stories and pushed for solutions on education, immigration, housing, and other neighborhood issues.  As members of the Campaign for Community Values, Northwest Bronx leaders talked about how we are all in this together, affirming that community values are the foundation of their work for social justice.   For more information on the Forum and the issue campaigns, please visit their website hereAnd check out the Ning site to check out resources from this event!
