Partnerships for Change is a project that brings community organizations and local teachers unions together to learn from each other and to support joint work in order to improve public education, particularly for low-income students and children of color.
The project was initiated by a small group of community organizers, teachers union leaders, foundation officers and the Center for Community Change (CCC). In April 2003, and again in March 2004, we convened union and community representatives from school districts where collaborative work was developing between parents and teachers. Each team included two representatives from the local teachers union and two representatives from an experienced and powerful community organization with a track record on public school reform.
The meetings provided an opportunity for representatives of these partnerships to build their relationships, meet and share experiences with colleagues and explore the power of a common agenda focused on improving education for disadvantaged children.
