Silent Majority of Americans Want Reform

Posted by: Sally Kohn . Monday, Aug 31, 2009

Portraying the debate over health care reform as a fight between poor, inner-city liberals without health insurance on one side versus middle class, rural conservatives shouting about taxes and government on the other side misses the true story entirely. In the middle of the country, and in the middle of states from Maine to Montana, there are literally people in the middle --- who don’t think of themselves in ideological terms but understand that it’s dangerous when big business rules our health care system and understand that government has a vital role to play in regulating and correcting what’s broken.

A team of filmmakers and grassroots volunteers has traveled to state and county fairs across middle America to collect story upon story.  You can check some of them out at www.statefairstories.org.

Chris has health insurance but it still didn’t cover his cancer treatments, leaving him with over $20,000 in debt.  Nancy (posted soon) owned a small business, her life-long dream, but eventually the cost of health insurance for her and her employees drove her out of business.  James has insurance but worries about losing his job and, with it, his coverage.

There are millions and millions more stories like these --- the silent majority of Americans all across our country suffering from our broken health care system and pleading with Congress to pass health care reform now.  Check out these stories and help make sure they get more attention than the few people shouting from the fringe:  www.statefairstories.org.
